The budtender as a key figure in the cannabis dispensary

Budtenders are a common feature of cannabis social clubs. Combining the concepts of bartender and bud, this term refers to an essential figure in the emerging cannabis culture. Although variants such as 'ganjier' or 'cannabis connoisseur' exist, 'budtender' is the term that has taken root most strongly. This Anglo-Saxon word still does not have an adequate translation in our context. Some people refer to them as cannabis 'advisors' or 'sommeliers', but they could also be guides, experts or counsellors.
The budtender is the specialist responsible for caring for consumers in a cannabis dispensary. They play a fundamental role by combining personal experience with in-depth knowledge of cannabis strains, cannabinoids, terpenes, and consumption methods to guide members of the CSC. They also play a key role in destigmatising cannabis use and offering personalised recommendations. Therefore, excellent communication skills are paramount, as is keeping up to date with new market developments and future trends.
As our readers will know from the RdR cannabis project, cannabis social clubs (CSCs), based on the risk reduction paradigm, are ideal spaces for connecting, researching and educating people who use cannabis. The staff of these associations, particularly the budtenders, have great potential as health educators and can act as role models for members. Of all the staff in a CSC, budtenders have the greatest potential to influence members' attitudes and consumption habits. They may even have as much credibility as the consumer's own peer group.
Any CSC member knows what we are talking about. A good budtender is a jewel to be cherished, and like pearls, they do not just appear by chance. They need to be cultivated. For this person to excel in a dispensary, a number of factors must be in place. The most important factor is that the CSC itself recognises their value; things cannot be left to improvisation or divine providence. Not just anyone can do this job well. From the outset, responsibilities must be clearly defined. For example, a potential job description should include:
- Organisational and communication skills.
- Keeping up to date with the latest products, varieties, genetics, trends and developments in the sector.
- Accurately managing transactions and stock.
- Maintaining a clean and organised dispensary area.
- Hygienically dispensing products.
- Provide recommendations based on members' preferences and needs, such as desired effects, method of consumption, and previous experience.
- Answer questions about various cannabis products, e.g. cannabis balls, edibles, concentrates, extracts and tinctures.
- Help CSC members to understand the different effects of various cannabis strains.
- Provide risk reduction training.
Of all the theoretical content that budtenders need to master, some topics are more fundamental than others. For example, knowledge of the main phytocannabinoids:
- Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC): the main psychoactive component of cannabis, responsible for the euphoric effect or 'high' associated with consumption.
- Cannabidiol (CBD): a non-psychotropic cannabinoid; it does not produce the mind-altering effects associated with THC. However, it acts on the central nervous system and is therefore technically considered psychoactive due to its influence on the nervous system. It has several medicinal properties, such as reducing anxiety and inflammation and reducing the severity of seizures in some forms of epilepsy.
- Cannabigerol (CBG) is often called the 'mother of all cannabinoids' because other cannabinoids are derived from cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), the acidic form of CBG. CBG has potential medicinal properties, such as reducing anxiety and inflammation, as well as antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.
- Cannabinol (CBN) is a minor cannabinoid produced when THC ages. It is believed to have sedative properties.
They should also be familiar with terpenes (such as myrcene, limonene and pinene) and their role in the effects of cannabis. We have written a blog post on this topic.
Another topic they should cover is the different types of products available in dispensaries, particularly the most popular ones: balls, concentrates, edibles, tinctures, topicals and pre-rolled joints. We have also covered this topic here before.
Dosage is a key variable in the equation for the effects of any drug. Knowing the correct dosage for a given time and context is essential for reducing risks and maximising benefits. Dosage and use of cannabis products varies from person to person. Factors such as individual tolerance, the intended use, the cannabis strain (which has different levels of cannabinoids) and the method of use (e.g. smoking, ingesting or applying topically) influence the effect and duration. It is therefore recommended to start with a low dose and progressively adjust it until the right balance is found for an individual's needs.
Budtenders play a key role in the success of a dispensary. As a CSC member, there's nothing better than receiving advice with a smile from someone passionate about cannabis. Their in-depth product knowledge helps members to make the right choice, their excellent customer service builds loyalty, and their diligence in complying with regulations prevents unwanted situations. In essence, competent and motivated budtenders translate into satisfied members. Budtenders are also essential for gathering informal feedback on popular products, identifying gaps and spotting trends. This valuable information helps the CSC to make better decisions about the future of the dispensary.
A budtender's willingness to continually learn and genuinely connect with CSC members is key to excelling in the role. This involves not only advising on products and dosages, but also understanding the individual needs and preferences of each customer. Empathy and dedication enable budtenders to become agents of change, capable of transforming attitudes, combatting the stigma associated with cannabis, and encouraging responsible consumption. Ultimately, a dedicated budtender enriches the experience of association members and boosts the association's profile.
